The Basics
What Is a CSV to JSON Converter?
A CSV to JSON converter reads tabular data, rows and columns separated by a delimiter, and turns it into JSON. With a header row, each row becomes an object whose keys are the column names, giving you an array of objects that most APIs and languages consume directly.
Why convert CSV to JSON
Spreadsheets and database exports speak CSV, but web APIs, config files, and JavaScript speak JSON. Converting bridges the two: you can take a spreadsheet export and feed it straight into code, a REST request, or a test fixture.
What the converter handles
Quoted fields containing commas, quotes, and line breaks.
Automatic delimiter detection, or a delimiter you choose.
Header row to object keys, or a plain array of arrays.
Optional typing of numbers, booleans, and empty cells.
These are the rules the converter applies so the output is predictable every time.
CSV
Becomes in JSON
Header row
The column names, used as object keys (when the header option is on).
Each data row
One object (header on) or one array (header off).
The whole file
A JSON array, one entry per data row.
A quoted field
Text that may hold commas, line breaks, and escaped quotes ("").
A numeric or boolean cell
A real number or boolean, when Typed values is on.
An empty cell
null when typed, or an empty string when not.
Typed values and when to leave them off
With Typed values on, 42 becomes a number and true becomes a boolean, which is what most code expects. The converter is conservative: a value like 007 or 1.50 stays a string, because converting it would lose the leading zero or trailing digit, which matters for ZIP codes, IDs, and SKUs. Turn typing off entirely to keep every value as a string. Once you have JSON, the JSON formatter will pretty-print or validate it, and the JSON viewer renders it as a tree.
Ragged rows and delimiters
If a row has fewer columns than the header, the missing fields become null; if it has more, the extra values get an indexed key such as column4, so nothing is dropped. Auto delimiter detection reads the first line and picks comma, semicolon, tab, or pipe, but you can force one from the dropdown. To go the other way, from JSON back to a spreadsheet, use the JSON to CSV tool.
Walkthrough
A Worked Example: Export to Array of Objects
See exactly how a CSV with a quoted field and mixed types becomes clean JSON.
Notice three things: the header became the object keys, age became a real number and active a boolean, and the quoted "Maida Vale, London" stayed a single field even though it contains a comma. That is the behaviour described in the mapping table above. For the format itself, see our guide on what JSON is.
Use Cases
When to Convert CSV to JSON
CSV goes in, usable JSON comes out.
Feed an API
Turn a spreadsheet export into the JSON body a REST endpoint expects.
Seed a Database
Convert rows into JSON records for an import or migration script.
Front-End Data
Drop a dataset straight into JavaScript as an array of objects.
Test Fixtures
Build JSON fixtures and mock responses from sample CSV.
Config Files
Move tabular settings into JSON-based configuration.
Spreadsheet to Code
Hand off an Excel or Sheets export to developers as JSON.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything developers ask about converting CSV to JSON.
It reads the rows and columns of CSV and produces JSON. With a header row it builds an array of objects keyed by column name; without one it builds an array of arrays. Everything runs in your browser.
No. Keep the first-row-is-header option on to use the column names as object keys, or turn it off to get a plain array of arrays, one inner array per row of values.
Fields wrapped in double quotes may contain commas, line breaks, and escaped quotes written as two double quotes. The parser follows standard CSV quoting rules, so a quoted comma does not split the field.
Yes. Auto mode inspects the first line and picks comma, semicolon, tab, or pipe. You can also force a specific delimiter from the dropdown.
With Typed values on, a value like 42 becomes a JSON number and true or false becomes a boolean, while an empty cell becomes null. Turn it off to keep every value as a string, which is safer for ZIP codes and IDs.
No. Parsing runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your CSV is never uploaded, never stored, and never logged, so it is safe for sensitive exports.
Missing values become null and extra values beyond the header get an indexed key such as column4, so no data is silently dropped.
